Numismatic Collection 2024: coin celebrating track and field champion Pietro Mennea issued

The Ministry of Economy and Finance today issued a coin, produced by the Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato, dedicated to the European Athletics Championships Rome 2024 which celebrates Pietro Mennea, the Italian sprinter, known as “the Arrow of the South”, who held the world record in the 200 metre dash for 17 years and won the gold medal at the 1980 Moscow Olympics.

 

The coin, designed by the artist Uliana Pernazza, was minted in gold-plated silver, in proof version, with a mintage of 5,000 pieces.
