
Marcello Sala is the Director General of the Economy, of the Italian Minister of Economy and Finance.
In addition to the responsibilities related to his role at the Ministry, he is Member of the Board of Directors of Leonardo Spa, Member of the Council for Inclusive Capitalism, Member of the Capital Markets Reform Committee and Member of the Board of Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia.
Former Director General Financial Institutions at the Treasury Department (since February 2023), he has 30 years of experience in financial services, banking, private equity and mergers and acquisitions within leading institutions at a global level.
He was a Partner at Apis Partners, a leading ESGI-native financial services private equity asset manager with a global presence. He also was the Executive Vice Chairman of the Intesa Sanpaolo Group Management Board (2007-2016), where he was in charge of the international business and institutional relations. In 2008, he co-founded Banca ITB (now Mooney), a neo-bank focused on innovative payment solutions for the Italian retail market, and as Executive Director, he successfully managed its sale in 2016.
His past appointments also include: Chairman of the Italian Egyptian Business Council, Vice Chairman of Alexbank, member of the Trilateral Commission, member of the International Council of the Bretton Woods Committee, board member of ISPI (Italian Institute for International and Political Studies), and member of the Global Agenda Council on Future of Financing and Capital of the World Economic Forum.
He also holds a degree in Economics (Management) and a degree in Political Science (International Relations), both from the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore of Milan.
