Public Assets: Enea Report published with the aid of the Department of the Economy database

As part of the planning of measures to be taken to achieve the energy-environmental objectives set out in the European Directives, ENEA (national agency for new technologies, energy and sustainable economic development) has published a Report “The size of the national housing stock”, drafted with the aid of data provided by the Department of the Economy - Directorate III Enhancement of Public Assets, for the part concerning public assets.

The database for public assets, set up by the Department of the Economy pursuant to Article 2, subsection 222 of Law No. 191/2009, in which more than two and a half million property units, including buildings and land, are currently registered, represents a concrete tool to support the process of enhancement and the adoption of economic policy measures.

Thanks to the detailed information collected in the database, it was possible in the Report to estimate the contribution that the public sector is called upon to make towards the achievement of Italy’s energy efficiency targets.  Indeed, the database made it possible to carry out calculations on the stock of public assets - with the detail required for the analyses - in terms of surface area and intended use, taking into account the climate zone, the period of construction and the presence of cultural restrictions.

The database of the Department of the Economy is currently used, among other things, in institutional round tables such as that of the “Steering committee for the coordination of active policies for the reduction of seismic vulnerability of public buildings”, pursuant to Law No. 213/2023 (see Communiqué of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers).
